Berbice River man charged over shotgun after allegedly threatening to kill mom

A De Velde, Berbice River resident has been charged with unlawful possession of a shotgun and matching ammunition after police say he threatened to kill his mother with the weapon.

Ryan Sauers, 38, of De Velde, Berbice River, appeared before Magistrate Alex Moore at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court, where he pleaded not guilty to unlawful possession of a single barrel 12-gauge shotgun as well as two live shotgun cartridges.

He was remanded until October 4.

A police statement yesterday said that the charges resulted after Sauers allegedly pointed the shotgun at his mother and swore that he would kill her during a heated altercation on Wednesday. It noted that an alert neighbour responded and successfully disarmed the irate Sauers and that the unlicensed weapon and the cartridges were promptly handed over to the police.

The statement added that an additional charge in respect of the threats will be instituted, when Sauers makes his second court appearance.
