Bandits rob Diamond woman of $500,000 on return from bank

A woman was yesterday afternoon robbed at her Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara home, moments after she returned from the bank.

The woman had visited the Republic Bank branch at Diamond, where she made a withdrawal of $500,000. As the woman was entering her yard, two men approached and held her at gunpoint and demanded the cash.

With the woman stunned, the bandits easily collected her bag with the cash and personal items before making good their escape. The woman and her family believe that she was trailed from the bank to her home.

Meanwhile, an alert detective yesterday managed to apprehend a suspected bandit on the Better Hope Railway Embankment after a robbery.

Commander of ‘C’ Division Calvin Brutus yesterday said that three men pounced on a young woman as she was walking along the embankment and robbed her of her bag. He noted that before stealing the woman’s bag, the men dealt her several punches.

He explained that two of the suspects managed to escape but the policeman, who was in the area, managed to apprehend one of the men with the assistance of public-spirted citizens.

The identities of the victims were not released for security reasons.
