Trucker fined for driving under the influence after Kumu trail accident

A truck driver was fined $10,000 on Monday for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Dexter Franklin was brought before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, who read a charge which stated that on May 14, along the Kumu Trail, at Rupununi, he drove GTT 8398 under the influence of alcohol.

Franklin pleaded guilty to the charge.

Police Prosecutor Arvin Moore told the court that on the day in question, Franklin was involved in an accident along the Kumu Trail and was subsequently arrested and taken to the Lethem Police Station.

At the Lethem station, the prosecutor noted, a breathalyser test was conducted and the reading showed that the defendant’s breath alcohol content exceeded the prescribed amount.

The Chief Magistrate asked Franklin if he wished to say anything but he declined. He was then fined $10,000. He was granted a week to pay the fine.
