Elite eight in action tonight in Linden

The Amelia’s Ward Basketball Tarmac will come alive tonight when the quarterfinal round of the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Linden edition kicks off from 20:00hrs.

In the opening match Swag Entertainment will lock horns with Cherokee Park. Touted as a genuine contender for the title, Swag Entertainment sealed their berth to the quarterfinal round with a 3-0 thrashing of Goodfellas while Cherokee Park punched their ticket to the final eight by edging Future Stars 1-0.

The second match at 20:30hrs will bring together event favourite Dave and Celina All-Stars and Young Kings.

The All-Star ensemble stormed their way into the elite eight via a 3-0 dismantling of Amazings, while Young Kings battled past Trainline Warriors 2-0 on penalty kicks.

In the third match, 2014 winner Jermaine and Family Silver Bullets will lock horns with High Rollers at 21:00hrs. Silver Bullets riddled 2011 and 2013 champion Eagles 4-0 to earn their quarterfinal berth.

For High Rollers, their place in the elite eight was secured via a 1-0 victory over Dream Chasers. The final fixture of the night will pit defending champion Team 25 against 2012 and 2015 titlist and home side Amelia’s Ward Russians at 21:30hrs.

The holders maintained their aspiration of defending their title after edging Coomacka 1-0 in the earlier round of 16 stage. Similarly, Russians squeaked past Main Street Panthers by an identical score line in the Amelia’s Ward derby.

The event will resume on Wednesday with the semifinals at the Mackenzie Market Tarmac.

The winning team will pocket $400,000 and the championship trophy. They will also earn the right to represent the zone at the National Championship.

The runners-up prize is $150,000 and the corresponding accolade while the third and fourth place finishers will walk away with $75,000 and $50,000 apiece and the respective trophy.
