Umesh Boodram, the driver who collided with two young men on a motorcycle at Ogle, was yesterday charged with causing their deaths by dangerous driving.

Boodram was not required to plead to the indictable charges, which stated that on December 9th at Ogle Access Road, he drove motor vehicle PGG 8844 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Jason Harris and Rameshwar Singh.

Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul granted Boodram his release on $600,000 bail on the condition that he lodge his passport. The matter was adjourned until January 16th, 2019, when it will be heard at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.

Police had said Harris was riding his motorcycle CJ 6360 along with Singh, who was the pillion rider, at around 11.20pm on Saturday when the accident occurred.

According to the police, the two men were travelling west along the East Coast Demerara highway. Upon approaching the Ogle Access Road, the jeep PGG8844, which was travelling east along the northern carriageway, turned onto the Ogle Access Road and collided with the motorbike. Both Harris and Singh were flung onto the roadway and sustained injuries.  The men were picked up in an unconscious state and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where they both succumbed to their injuries on Sunday morning.

A breathalyser test showed that the driver had no alcohol on his breath at the time of the accident.

Stabroek News had previously reported that the young men, who were close friends and neighbours, had left their home sometime around 11pm to purchase food.
