Man charged with traffic death of Bartica overseer

A Bartica resident was yesterday granted $200,000 bail after he was charged with causing the death of Mark Dutchin, an overseer of the Region 7 Democratic Council (RDC), who was struck down and killed during last month along the Bartica roadway.

Salliem Khan, 23, of Lot 1 One Mile, Bartica is accused of driving motor car PLL 3322 along Fifth Street, Bartica on December 27, in a manner dangerous to the public thereby causing the death of Dutchin.

Khan pleaded not guilty to the charge when he appeared before Magistrate Dylon Bess at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.

Bail was granted and the matter was adjourned to today when it will be called again before Magistrate Crystal Lambert in the same court.

The accident occurred around 9.30 pm on December 27 along First Street, Bartica.

Dutchin, 65, an overseer at the Works Department of the Region 7 RDC and of Bartica Old Housing Scheme was picked up in an unconscious state and taken to the Bartica Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Enquiries, this newspaper was told, revealed that Khan was proceeding east along the northern side of the Fifth Street, Bartica road allegedly at a fast rate when he alleged that Dutchin, who was walking west along the northern side of the said road suddenly walked into his lane.
