Corrective works to soon begin on Lethem Police Station horse stables

The Ministry of Public Security will soon commence corrective works on the Lethem Police Station horse stables, months after terminating the contract for its construction due to alleged shoddy works by the contractor, ministry spokeswoman Mary Adams related.

Stabroek News had in July reported that a coastland contractor who was awarded a contract to construct the horse stable at the station had abandoned the works.

At the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board recently, bids were tendered for the design and supervision services for the construction of the stables at the Lethem Police Station. Six local companies in the construction field tendered bids to provide the services.

According to Adams, a contract has not yet been awarded and they are currently in the evaluation process.

Asked if a new stable will be constructed, Adams responded in the negative. She explained that corrective works will be undertaken before the housing facility for the animals can progress.

Asked further by this newspaper the amount spent on the construction of the stable, she noted that she was not in a position to disclose the figure or any details as it relates to the contractor.

In a previous publication, it was reported that Adams noted that the ministry “would not want to hinder any prospective jobs for the contractor and we would like to keep a professional relationship between us and him.”

A source had told Stabroek News that the project was estimated at over $20 million and only two sections of walls for the stable were constructed.

The ministry has been tightlipped on the quality of work done and the amount spent on the last structure.
