Defending champions Demerara Cricket Club (DCC), the Everest Cricket Club (ECC) and the Police Sports Club (PSC) notched up wins during Sunday’s round of matches in the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA), New Building Society (NBS) 40-over second division tournament.
DCC at home defeated the University of Guyana (UG) by 35 runs on the back of a Sachin Singh century, which was complemented by a clinical bowling effort by the host.
Singh, who struck his second century of the tournament, blasted 13 fours and 11 sixes in an unbeaten knock of 166 to carry his side to 261 for 1 in 39 overs.
Singh, who is a national and West Indian youth cricketer, featured in an 85-run opening stand with Garrick Persaud (35) before adding 176 with Alphius Bookie (44*) in a partnership where they ran well between the wickets and dispatched anything that was loose.
It was a sorry bowling card for the students as most bowlers went the distance.
UG’s response, however, was hampered by rain which forced a revised target of 193 in 28 overs.
They only managed 158 for nine before their overs expired with Linden Austin recording a fighting innings of 43 while Devon Paul was unbeaten on 34.
Seamer Carlton Jacques (3-32) produced another clinical spell at this level and got support from leg spinner Steven Sankar (4-47), who seems to be finding his radar once again.
Over at Everest, the host defeated Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) by 35 runs.
Everest, after winning the toss and electing to bat, posted 236 – 6 from 35 overs. They were led by Amir Khan (90), who fell ten short of his century after striking four maximums and five fours while Saheed Mohamed (60) and Adrian Sukhwa (61) played supporting roles.
Seamers Keon Morris (3-40) and Rawle Merrel (2-34) spearheaded MSC’s bowling effort as they folded for 196 in 34.3 overs in response.
Marcus Watkins carved out 60 while Nicoksie Barker (43) missed out on a half-century in MSC failed run chase. National youth player Javed Rasheed (3-36), Rayled Payne (2-60) and Travis Mohamed (2-43) did the damage with the ball for Everest.
Police, on the other hand, edged past the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) by 11 runs at GCC ground.
Police posted 191 for three from their allotted 40 overs with Kevin Boodie (53), Andrew Lyght Jr. (44) and Kemol Savory (47) doing the bulk of the scoring.
Devon Lord picked up 2 for 27 for GCC who needed 149 from 24 overs after the match was affected by rain.
The host, however, folded for 138 with West Indies Under – 15 batsman Mavendra Dindyal (47) top scoring as the wickets were evenly shared amongst the lawmen.
