Teacher dies in Corentyne highway hit and run

A Canje Secondary School teacher died last evening after he was allegedly struck by a truck along the Corentyne highway.

According to information gathered by this newspaper, Joel Wills, 27, was proceeding on motorcycle CH 1026 heading towards the Berbice River Bridge when he was allegedly struck by a truck proceeding in the opposite direction on the Number 1 Village, Corentyne main road, just before the Borlam Turn around 7.15 pm.

Sunday Stabroek was told that the teacher sustained a major head injury and other injuries. Persons who rushed to the scene claimed that the truck driver did not stop to render assistance. “Everybody think he dead. Some people check he pulse and say he dead but when them police come, them say he breathing and them take he to the hospital,” a resident of the area where the accident occurred said last evening.

Wills, who is from Rosignol, West Bank Berbice, was rushed to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he eventually succumbed.

Sunday Stabroek was told that the man was returning home from assisting with a church event in Fyrish Village, Corentyne, when the accident occurred.

Wills taught wood works, joinery and technical drawing at the Canje Secondary School.
