The man accused of stabbing Timehri labourer Denzil Brummell more than two weeks ago was charged with the crime but was subsequently freed after the victim refused to offer evidence against him.

Stabroek News was reliably informed that just days after the stabbing, the suspect was charged with attempted murder at the Providence Magistrate’s Court. However, the charge against him was dismissed after Brummell indicated to the court that he no longer wished to proceed with the prosecution.

The accused is said to be a relative of Brummell’s girlfriend.

Brummell, 21, of Lot 12 Alliance Road, Timehri, East Bank Demerara, was stabbed three times about his body, including in the region of his heart during an argument which had occurred around 11 pm on April 7th at Craig, also on the East Bank.

He was taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Hospital, and then transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), where he was admitted as a patient in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where he spent some time before being discharged.

Natasha Williams, Brummell’s mother, had explained to Stabroek News that Brummell was at his girlfriend’s house in Craig when the stabbing occurred. Williams said while there, an argument ensued between Brummell and the suspect. The argument, she said, later escalated, and the suspect allegedly armed himself with a knife from the kitchen and stabbed Brummell.
