Unlicensed drivers should not be operating vehicles or machinery

Dear Editor,

The writer of the letter headlined, ‘Bribe-seeking cops preying on farmers using De Hoop branch road’ (SN: 23/04/19), on the one hand states he will not condone breaking of the law, while on the other, apparently sees nothing wrong with “a farmer, who may be unlicensed, driving home who may have taken a drink.”

Wrong is wrong and cannot be right.

If one is unlicensed, then one should not be operating or driving a vehicle or machinery of any kind whether on private or public property.

Of course, the allegation of officers exploiting the situation for their personal benefit needs to be fully and properly investigated.

The authorities need to work with these drivers of vehicles who are illiterate to get them properly and fully compliant with the law.

I fail to see how they are professional when it comes to actually operating the machines if, in the first place, the basic criteria for being deemed professional has not been met.

Yours faithfully,

Shamshun Mohamed
