Kitty residents call on Minister to address noisy Station St bar

Residents of Station Street, Kitty, are calling on the authorities to resolve a problem of noise nuisance within the community.

In a letter to Minister of Public Security Khemraj Ramjattan, dated January 15, 2019, the residents stated that the Roopa’s Bar, located at 58 Upper Station Street, Kitty, usually blasts loud music, which affects all of the surrounding neighbours.

The letter, which was written by Azeem Baksh, further added that the loud music goes well after the 2 am curfew on most days, but especially on the weekends. Baksh explained that his children and grandchildren are affected, especially since they have school work to do.

When Stabroek News made a visit to the Ministry to enquire about receipt of the letter and if anything had been done to assist the concerned residents, this newspaper was told that the letter was received and passed on to the minister’s personal assistant, however, she was not available at the time to give a comment.

Baksh also said that before writing the letter to the minister, the residents had contacted the police on numerous occasions. The letter stated that at times, when the police patrol would visit the bar, the music would be turned down but just moments after the police leave, the volume would return to where it was before.

Baksh’s letter to this newspaper was accompanied by a copy of another letter, which was written to the proprietor of the Bar. It carried the signatures of other neighbours who are affected by the loud music.

During a visit to the Station Street bar, Stabroek News contacted one of the proprietors, who denied that the music at the bar is played at an extreme level. While the proprietor, who did not give his name, stated that the music would be very loud on Friday nights when they host Karaoke nights, he further added that during the week, any loud music played is played by customers who have music boxes in their vehicles, who would open the doors and crank up the volume.
