Corentyne man loses fingers after being chopped by drinking buddy

A Corentyne man is now a patient at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital after he was chopped several times by a known drinking buddy of his on Wednesday afternoon.

Ramnarine Latchman, also known as ‘Ravo,’ 53, a fisherman of Lot 108 Number 72 Village, Corentyne, sustained chop wounds to his right hand, from which four of his fingers were severed. He was also chopped to his left hand and to his shoulders.

According to a police source, the suspect, Mahesh Singh, also known as ‘Tall Man,’ 51, a labourer of Number 72 Village, Corentyne, has since been arrested and is expected to be formally charged on Monday in a Corentyne court.

Stabroek News was told that the two are known drinking buddies and that on Wednesday, around 9 am, they were drinking in celebration of Latchman’s birthday. However, around 2.30 pm, during the drinking spree, an argument reportedly ensued between the two regarding a cigarette, which led to Singh allegedly arming himself with a cutlass and chopping Latchman about his body.

Latchman then ran out of his yard and alerted residents, who immediately came to his aid.

He was rushed to the Skeldon Public Hospital but has since been transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he remains a patient.
