World C/ships berth at stake at AAG Senior National C/ships

An IAAF World Championships berth, one year’s bragging rights and cash incentives will all be on the line when the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG) stages its flagship National Senior Championships on June 29-30.

These and other details were disclosed yesterday at the AAG’s headquarters during the formal launch of the annual event.

According to president of the association, Aubrey Hutson, athletes will be getting into the blocks at 10:00hrs each day as they look to scorch the rubber at the National Track and Field Centre.

Hutson added that “one of the most looked forward to events on the AAG’s calendar” will attract quite a number of overseas based Guyanese looking to qualify for the ‘Worlds’ since the meet will be a qualifier.

Note: The seventeenth edition of the IAAF World Championships is scheduled to be held between September 27 and October 6, 2019 in Doha, Qatar.

He stated that in excess of 150 athletes have registered to compete at the fixture which will “have prize money in every event.” 

On the local scene, he pointed out that sprinters Akeem Stewart and Davin Fraser will renew their rivalry and will match spikes for the title of fastest man in the 592.

Hutson along with first Vice President, Sheryl Hermonstine and Competitions Director, Mayfield Taylor-Trim then collectively urged fan to attend and show their support for the athletes. 

A fund raising Bar-B-Q is also scheduled. Admission to the venue is $300 and sponsors so far include Banks DIH Limited and Bounty Farm Limited. (Emmerson Campbell)
