A month after denying breaking and entering a shop and stealing over $100,000 in articles, one of the two men accused of the crime admitted to the charge and was sentenced to prison, while his co-accused, who maintained his innocence, remains on remand.
Compton Fernandes, a 47-year-old cleaner, and Latchman Sukhan, a car driver, appeared before Magistrate Faith McGusty approximately one month ago and denied the charge alleging that between May 20 and 21, 2019, at Albouystown, they broke and entered the shop of Shanelle Prince and stole two gas bottles valued $17,000 and a Samsung music set valued $96,000.
They were both remanded to prison after giving the court unreliable addresses.
During their appearance in court yesterday, Fernandes told the magistrate that he was guilty of the offence. He was subsequently sentenced to 12 months in prison. Sukhan maintained his innocence and was told to return to court on July 3, 2019.
It was previously reported that on the day in question, a relative of Prince’s was passing in the vicinity of her shop when he saw the shop open. After entering the shop, he allegedly discovered the two men and quickly raised an alarm. Fernandes and Sukhan were subsequently arrested.
