Marian Academy edges Kwakwani 33-32 in double O/T

A number of close matches highlighted the latest round of the National Schools Basketball Festival Thursday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Homestretch Avenue with Marian Academy and Kwakwani girls encounter being the closest of them all.

There were also a few lopsided encounters highlighted by President’s College whipping of  Marian Academy 30-7 in the U14 division.

For President’s College, Rasean Barnwell, Daniel London and Daniel Isaac each scored six points while Demetrius DeAbreu scored four points for Marian Academy.

In another U14 fixture, St. Stanislaus College edged St. Rose’s High 25-21 with Daniel Bailey recording a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds. He was assisted by Jamey Bascom who scored eight points. 

For St Rose’s High, Carmelo Man-Son-Hing tallied 13 points.

In another close fixture, Kwakwani Secondary overcame YBG 25-22. 

Travis Lewis netted six points while Devonte Gonsalves and Kelon Phillips added five and four points respectively.

For YBG, Kaden Khan and Amare Stewart scored six and four points respectively.

In the girls division, Marian Academy edged Kwakwani 33-32 in double overtime. 

Jada Mohan top scored with 13 points and six rebounds while Kelliann Sauers added 10 points and Jahrier Young six points.

For Kwakwani, Shania Sears recorded 18 points and eight rebounds while Jalade Trim scored six points and four rebounds.

Meanwhile, Queen’s College dismissed St. Stanislaus 23-6. Naiomi Barkoye led the rout with 16 points, while Luanna Mohan scored three points.

For St Stanislaus, Sharay Johnson bagged four points.

The semifinal round of the event is set to take place today at the same venue.

In the girls division, Marian Academy will face off with St. Stanislaus College at 16:30hrs and Kwakwani will tackle Queen’s College from 17:30hrs.

In the boys U14 section, President’s College will oppose St. Stanislaus from 18:30hrs and Kwakwani will engage the Bishops’ High at 19:30hrs.

Finally the U18 division will take centre stage tomorrow with President’s College matching skills with Berbice High from 17:30hrs and Kwakwani taking aim at New Amsterdam Technical Institute at 18:30hrs.

The final for all three divisions will be held on Saturday. Sponsors of the event are Edward B. Beharry and Company Limited, The National Sports Commission, Banks DIH, ExxonMobil and Bounty Limited.
