(Trinidad Express) One man was killed and two people injured when a gunman opened fire at the Princes Town Market just before dawn yesterday.

The shooting made a melee of the sacred tradition of Sundays at the market, as scores of shoppers and vendors had already assembled along Cacique Street, where Kyrel Braxton was fatally shot.

Braxton, of St Croix Road, Princes Town, was shot multiple times and died at the entrance to Khan’s Poultry around 5 a.m.

According to reports, the attacker had targeted two people, but also struck passer-by Raymond Millington, who was left with a bullet lodged inside his mouth after it entered his left ear.

A woman was also shot in the leg, with both persons currently at hospital, the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) has said. The bold killing took place just around the corner from Princes Town Police Station.

The Express understands the market is usually patrolled by municipal police. However, it was reported that no police were present at the time of the murder.

The killer escaped, having brought the murder toll for 2019 so far to 267.

Princes Town MP Barry Padarath told the Express the killing also traumatised parishioners at the neighbouring Princes Town Roman Catholic Church, which connects to Cacique Street.

“This is the third murder in Princes Town in a few months,” Padarath said, in a telephone interview. “There are no sacred spaces left, that ship sailed a long time ago.”

Princes Town is expecting a visit later this year by Commissioner of Police Gary Griffith, Padarath said, adding that rising crime in that constituency was the work of outside elements.
