The Guyana Under 17s got off to a forgettable start in their 2019 Cricket West Indies Future Stars tournament after suffering defeats at the hands of hosts, Trinidad and Tobago and defending champions, Barbados over the weekend.

Guyana opened their campaign with a nine-wicket loss against Trinidad at the National Cricket Centre, Balmain Couva. The visitors were bundled out for just 91 in 38.3 overs. West Indies U15 batsman, Mavindra Dindyal top scored with 46. His knock included four boundaries and no other batsman reached double figures.

Darren Samlal and Sion Hacket accounted for three wickets each while Chadion Raymond and Isiah Gomez took two wickets a piece.

In reply, the hosts were never troubled with Jeremiah Cruickshank and Kyle Roopchand finishing unbeaten on 42 and 38 respectively as they coasted to their target in 19.5 overs, losing one wicket along the way.

The Guyanese suffered a similar fate the next day as the defending champions brushed them aside in a seven-wicket conquest at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy, Tarouba.

The batting made some amends somewhat with Matthew Nandu, who was recently drafted in the Global T20 Canada League,  carrying his bat through the innings with a solid 71 as Guyana crept to 141-9 in their 50 overs.

Nandu, along with fellow opener and captain, Sheldon Charles (21) provided the foundation which the middle order failed to build on as Dindyal (07), Zeynul Ramsammy (00), Andre Seepersaud (00), Marvan Prashad (00), Sarwan Chaitnarine (01) and Niran Bissu (06) fell cheaply.

Johann Layne picked up 4-33 while Tariq O’Neale bagged 2-24.

In reply, Barbados raced to 146-3 in 36 overs with Hakeem Perryman and Kevin Wickham steering their side to victory with respective scores of 38 not out and 26 not out. Thierry Walcott was dismissed for nine while Jaden Leacock (35) and Rivaldo Clarke (13) were the other two batsmen to fall. Ramsammy and Nandu had one wicket each.

Guyana will face the Windward Islands today at Gilbert Park before facing Jamaica at the same venue on Thursday. They will wrap up the tournament with their final match against the Leeward Islands at Balmain Park on Saturday.
