Hours after the drive-by shooting in Festival City, North Ruimveldt, which claimed the life of former murder accused Leon Duncan, called ‘Whistle,’ police located a car that they believe was the one used in the attack.

Police said the shooting occurred around 9.55 pm on Sunday night at Williamstaad Street, Festival City, North Ruimveldt, Georgetown.

Three persons, including Leon Duncan’s brother, Shaquille Duncan, called ‘Lil Shaq,’ 25, of 2692 Manatee Place, South Ruimveldt, were also shot in the attack. Police said Shaquille sustained injuries to his right arm and left thigh. The two other injured persons are: Lawrence Simon, called ‘Plait Hair,’ 34, a construction worker, of 2104 Nutmeg Street, Festival City, who was shot to the left knee; and Orandy Gordon, 28, of 1195 Nutmeg Street, Festival City, who was shot to the left arm and right knee.

Police said their investigations have revealed that the men were gambling at a culvert on Williamstaad Street when a car approached. The car, police said, was proceeding at a normal speed. However, as it was about to pass the men, the occupant(s) of the car began shooting at the men indiscriminately. The car then sped away.

Following the shooting, the injured men were picked up by public-spirited citizens and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where Leon Duncan succumbed while receiving medical attention. Hours later, a car fitting the description of the one used in the shooting was found. A search was carried out on the vehicle and 31 live rounds, a single spent shell and a gun magazine were found in the car.

Stabroek News was told that the shooter(s) used a black Toyota 212. Leon Duncan fell to the ground while the other men scattered. A gunman reportedly exited the vehicle and continued firing shots at Leon Duncan.Residents reported that they were afraid of rendering assistance to the men since the car was still circling the area a few minutes after the attack.

In 2016, Leon Duncan was acquitted of the murder of Imtiaz Roopnarine, who was shot dead at the Cool Square Hotel, after a 12-member jury unanimously found him not guilty of the crime.

Meanwhile, Shaquille Duncan is also known to police. In March, he appeared before Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on an armed robbery charge.

It was alleged that on February 1st, 2019, at Mandela Avenue, Georgetown, while being armed with a gun, Duncan robbed Morris Enmore of a gold chain, valued $100,000.

He was also accused of committing a similar offence on February 5th, 2019, at Mandela Avenue, where Steve Munroe was robbed of a gold chain, valued at $360,000. He was caught by public-spirited persons after being accidently shot by his accomplice while attempting to escape the scene of the crime.

The matters are still being heard.
