Looming constitutional date for elections must be taken very seriously

Dear Editor,

The Liberty and Justice Party would like to congratulate Justice (Ret’d) Claudette Singh on her new appointment as the Chairwoman of the Guyana Elections Commission.

We are of the firm belief that Justice Singh’s objectivity, integrity and impartiality, in her new appointment, has restored the confidence in GECOM that is so vital to the conduct of elections and the integrity of the Constitutional body.

We also take this opportunity to commend the leadership of His Excellency, President David Granger, and the Leader of the Opposition, Dr. the Honourable Bharrat Jagdeo for coming to a consensual position on this important post.

We do recognize that the CCJ’s ruling highlighted that elections are to be held no later than September 18th, 2019 and that the President is the sole person upon whose shoulders that responsibility rests as per the Constitution of Guyana.

The looming constitutional date for elections to be held must be taken very seriously, and we now call on His Excellency, President David Granger and the Leader of the Opposition, Dr. the Honourable Bharrat Jagdeo, to once again, urgently and sincerely engage in dialogue to extend under Article 106(7) of the Constitution of Guyana, if necessary and requested by GECOM, the date for National and Regional Elections.

We encourage both parties to act in good faith to safeguard our nation and from further widening the fault lines that have most recently been revealed in our dear Guyana.

Yours faithfully,

Lenox Shuman
