The Mayor of Georgetown Ubraj Narine yesterday issued a statement saying that the city’s drainage system is working unlike under the former PPP/C administration.

Narine noted that when President David Granger took office in 2015, he encouraged a massive clean-up exercise which saw the participation of many sectors of society.

“Collaboration between the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority… Civil Defence Commission …Neighbourhood Democratic Councils, participating in cleaning exercises, which included the clearing of canals and outfall channels, but this mobilized the participation of non-governmental organizations, the business sector and the residents in the city of Georgetown and communities across Guyana coming together to clean a city and communities that were poorly managed by the previous PPP/C Government”, he said.

Under what he described as the “now opposing” PPP/C, he charged that outfall channels and drains were poorly maintained which led to major flooding in the city.

“Now we are seeing a system that works, with a smooth flow, the constant rainfall poses almost no threat, `no more stagnant water’, we have a faster runoff time.  This is due to the constant maintenance of the outfall channels in the city”, he declared.

He added: “We have seen a reduction in pest and rodents in communities, as we tackle vector control head-on. Intense flooding has been reduced and farmers are bringing goods to the market at an affordable price; residents and business can operate in a clean safe environment with less flooding. This collaborative method of cleaning and management of garbage disposal will also help to attract Investors to our beautiful City of Georgetown and Guyana as a whole”.
