Wanton distribution of unusable plastic items must come to an end

Dear Editor,

My son (and other children) came away from Wednesday’s Science for Energy Workshop for children held at UG’s Turkeyen Campus with some useful information, but also with cheap plastic bottles with “Hallibur-ton” cheaply slapped onto them.  One couldn’t help recalling the cheap plastic bottles and kites that have, at least in the past, been distributed by Esso Exploration and Production Ltd., albeit with “ExxonMobil” a little more carefully stamped on.

The gall and the gumption of it all!  Surely these companies must know that plastic presents a waste-management problem, which in Guyana’s case often manifests itself in clogged canals and drains that readily overtop when there is rain? Or is it that these companies really don’t care about anything other than their investments here?

I urge that the practice of wantonly distributing cheap (unusable) plastic bottles and other paraphernalia come to an end with immediate effect.

Yours faithfully,
