Accused fraudster remanded

A Loo Creek fraud accused, who was recaptured after apparently giving police the slip by providing a fake name, was yesterday remanded to prison after a city court heard that he might be a flight risk.

Cliff Jacobs, 38, a miner of 264 Loo Creek, Soesdyke-Linden Highway, was read two charges at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts by Senior Magistrate Leron Daly.

It is alleged that that on September 24th, 2018, at Church Street, Georgetown, he incurred a debt amounting to $1.1 million from Austin Munroe by means of fraud. He pleaded not guilty to the charge.

He was also read a charge which states on September 26th, 2018, at Charlotte Street, Georgetown, with intent to defraud, he obtained $800,000 from Ishwar Singh by falsely pretending to be the owner of the property situated at 38 Better Hope, East Coast Demerara, and that he was in a position to sell the property. Jacobs also denied this allegation.

Police prosecutor Shellon Daniels objected to Jacobs being granted bail.

The prosecutor explained to the court that he was previously charged in another courtroom and upon being granted bail he failed to report back to the court. She informed the magistrate that Jacobs was later seen at a supermarket where a police rank was shopping and he was subsequently recaptured and brought back to court.

She also told the court that he had provided the court with false information, that is, a fake name, when he was previously charged.  After careful consideration of the information, Magistrate Daly remanded Jacobs to prison until September 13th.
