After admitting to robbing a Cuban national out of frustration, a young man was yesterday sentenced to a year in prison for the crime.

Storm Anthony Clarke was taken before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly to answer to a charge of armed robbery.

The charge states that Clarke, on August 22nd, at Lance Gibbs Street, Queenstown, while armed with an icepick, robbed Emanuel Santana of a wallet, two Cuban identification cards, a driver’s licence, $12,240 and US$2 (equivalent to GY$400).

After admitting to the crime, Clarke told the court that he was sorry for what he did and that the only reason he did it was because he was “frustrated.”

According to Prosecutor Christopher Morris, on the day in question the complainant and his wife were walking on Lance Gibbs Street when the defendant approached them, pulled out an icepick and pointed it at them. Clarke then went into the man’s pants pockets and took out the items mentioned in the charge. The prosecutor noted that the accused attempted to escape but was apprehended by public-spirited persons after Santana raised and alarm. A search was then carried out on Clarke and Santana’s wallet was found.

The prosecutor further said that Clarke is known to the police and was previously charged with assault and loitering.

Magistrate Daly later sentenced him to a year behind bars.
