The deteriorating state of Sussex Street has forced the Mayor and City Council to close it to vehicular traffic until further notice.
Councillors around the horseshoe table yesterday voted to close the street until it is rehabilitated. However, with the council strapped for cash, it is unclear how long the road, which runs through Charlestown will be closed.
Acting Town Clerk Sherry Jerrick told councillors that they have consulted with the Traffic Department of the Guyana Police Force and the Ministry of Public Infrastructure and informed them of plans to close the road.
She noted that while there was no objection, the agencies recommended that they issue a public advisory informing the public of the road closure.
