Businesses along Sussex Street are not expected to be affected by the planned closure of a section of the road.

The council plans to close the deteriorating stretch of road from St. Stephens Street to Cemetery Road, Charlestown.  The section runs south of the Le Repentir Cemetery and no businesses are located there.

The businesses are located in the section west of St. Stephens Street, running all the way to the Albouystown Market. There are alternative routes that can be used to access them from Albouystown.

The council on Monday announced that it will be closing the section of the road since it has been deteriorating rapidly.

Councillors around the horseshoe table on Mon-day voted to close the street until it is rehabilitated. However, with the council strapped for cash, it is unclear how long the road will be closed.

Acting Town Clerk Sherry Jerrick told councillors that the council has consulted with the Traffic Department of the Guyana Police Force and the Ministry of Public Infra-structure and informed them of plans to close the road.
