An 18-month sentence was yesterday imposed on a youth who admitted to robbing his former employer of over $500,000 in cash and valuables.

Appearing before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in Georgetown, Imran Persaud, 19, pleaded guilty to the charge that on June 1st, 2019, at Lot 333 Cummings Street, he robbed Kamran Shaikh of $400,000, US$500 (equivalent to Guyana $100,000) and a DVR, valued at $24,000, and made use of personal violence during the commission of the crime.

According to Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield, Shaikh is the owner of a home furnishing store and had employed Persaud about two days prior to the incident. The prosecutor noted that the two had a misunderstanding and Persaud was paid for the days that he worked.

On the day in question, Mansfield said, between 9 and 10, Shaikh went to his business place, which is located at Lot 333 Cummings Street, where he saw Persaud and another person in his store. Persaud and the other individual confronted Shaikh and Persaud dealt him a lash to his head and relieved him of the items mentioned in the charge and they escaped. The attack was later reported to the Alberttown Police Station and Persaud was arrested after subsequent investigations. None of the stolen items was recovered.

Following his guilty plea, Persaud was asked by the Chief Magistrate if he wished to say anything in relation to the charge. He declined. He was later sentenced to 18 months. He is also to receive counselling.
