A cattle farmer was yesterday sentenced to two years behind bars after admitting to possession of an unlicensed firearm and matching rounds that were found on him during a police search.

Sentenced for the crime was Shemroy Nedd, 37, of Lot 28 Ann’s Grove Village.

The first charge read to Nedd stated that on August 28th, at Cornhill Street, he had a .38 revolver in his possession without being a licensed firearm holder. It was also alleged that on the very date, he had two matching round of .38-calibre ammunition.

According to Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield, on the day in question, at about 10 am, ranks from the Brickdam Police Station were on patrol duty around the Stabroek area when they received certain information. As a result of the information received, they contacted Nedd and requested to carry out a search of his person, to which he agreed. It was during the search that the firearm and ammunition were found in his crotch.

When asked if he was a licensed firearm holder, Nedd said no. He was then arrested, and the firearm and ammunition were lodged.

When asked by the court if he wished to say anything, Nedd stated that he brought the gun from Venezuela. He added that he only had it because he heard that persons often steal cows here.

The Chief Magistrate later sentenced him to two years and fined him $50,000 for each charge. However, he will only serve two years behind bars since the sentences are expected to run concurrently.
