West Berbice farmer, worker charged over firearm, stolen meat

A West Coast Berbice farmer and his workman were this week charged with possession of firearms and stolen meat.

Deodat Chan,  44, a cattle/rice farmer of Lot 44 Plantation Hope, Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice and Nezam Ramjohn, 66, a Labourer of Experiment Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice, were jointly charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

They were also jointly charged with unlawful possession of meat. Chan was charged separately with unlawful possession of a firearm. They were both granted $200,000 bail each for the joint possession of a firearm and ammunition charge and $50,000 bail for the possession of meat charge. Chan was released on self bail for the other possession of firearm charge.

They both will return to court on June 26.

According to information gathered, Fazal Habibulla, a cattle farmer informed the police that he had received information that the men had shot one of his buffaloes at his ranch in the backdam of Abary and was bringing out the meat to sell on Saturday.

The police acted on the information and allegedly found the men with the unlicensed firearm and the stolen meat.
