A former Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) clerk has been charged with obtaining a bribe from the owner of the Rio Nightclub in exchange for not seizing illegal alcoholic beverages found on the premises.

Seresti Bascom, 33, of Lot 9 Melanie Damishana, denied the charge, which was read by Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in Georgetown yesterday.

The charge states that on December 4th, 2018, at the Rio Nightclub, George-town, while being an agent and clerk employed by GRA, Bascom corruptly obtained the sum of $1 million from Paul Daby for himself as a reward or inducement to not seize and removed all the illegal alcohol beverages found at the nightclub.

In his application for bail, Bascom’s attorney, Ronald Daniels, noted that his client is now a security officer at one of ExxonMobil’s offices and has three children.

With no objections by Prosecutor Sanj Singh, Bascom was granted bail in the sum of $80,000 and was told to return to court on September 20th, 2019 for report on the completion of the case file.
