Guyana’s 2018 Commonwealth Games, triple jump, gold medalist, Troy Doris has fully switched his focus towards achieving international glory next year, which includes an Olympic medal.

Having to sit out most of the competitive 2019 season due to injuries, the triple jumper who leapt into the record books following his heroic exploits last year in Australia, has aspirations of achieving a similar feat in Tokyo, Japan host of the XXXII Olympiad.

“There hasn’t really been much competition this year for me because of the injuries that I’ve been getting healed up” Doris told Stabroek Sport yesterday.

“I just want to be ready for next year coming into the Olympic year so I didn’t want to push any recovery methods too early, I’m just following therapist orders with that.”

He added “So no World Championships, I missed out on the Pan Am Games, nothing to be upset about. I’m just looking forward to next year really.”

The USA-born Doris disclosed that “Pretty much this year, I’ve been doing physical therapy and a lot of work in the weight room. Everything to get back into competition shape, so that’s going to stay the focus for the rest of the year.”

The 30 year-old continued “I’ll start back training mid September, compete at the Indoor World championships then continue until Tokyo. The two main goals are to contend for a medal in each of those Games which I know is possible.”

The 18th IAAF World Indoor Championships will be held from 13 to 15 next March in Nanjing, China while the Olympic Games will be staged from July 24 to August 9. Doris is no stranger to the big stage, in 2016, he was Guyana’s flag bearer at the Olympics closing ceremony. (Emmerson Campbell)
