Constitution is an unwavering line that divides law from lawlessness and cannot be compromised

Dear Editor,

I wish to thank Mr Hamilton Green for taking the time to reply to my letter of August 31, 2019. The sentiments expressed in my letter are not ideals that are ever simply constrained to school room teachings within the reality of a real world where the rule of law can be compromised to allow thuggery, violence and corruption to flourish.

Nor is the Constitution a mere guide since it embodies the values, principles and ethical behaviour by which our nation has agreed to be governed. It is the unwavering line that divides law from lawlessness and cannot be compromised.

As I stated in my previous letter, democracies encourage debate and compromise but decisions taken must comply with the law and Mr Green is well aware that compromising the law, in essence, permits lawlessness.

The current impasse is not a situation that necessitates compromise. What is urgently required is that the Granger Government – now in a caretaker capacity – respect, honour and uphold the Constitution.

I would like to think that in every classroom throughout Guyana, coastland and hinterland, every schoolboy (and schoolgirl) is being taught the role of the Constitution in upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice and peace for every citizen.

Hopefully, they will also be taught our political history and will learn of times when political leaders failed our country and instituted dictatorial rule that ignored all laws. Knowing the destruction that can follow such lawlessness, our children will each hopefully grow up with a healthy respect for the law and will work to make sure that our political leaders always respect the Constitution.

Yours faithfully,

Ryhaan Shah
