Giftland Mall remains ready to help ease power predicament

Dear Editor,

Once again I write to advise the Minister and his Board at GPL that we at Giftland Mall are ready to help ease the present power predicament.

The justifications for taking power from our plant are as follows.

1- It just requires very minor technical connection to place our Power Plant on the Grid, the poles are already laid.

2- Our costs are below their diesel plants.

3- The present perfect storm of issues to hit the corporation shows the need to have an alternative supply to help ease the load.

4- It will alleviate the suffering of thousands of households at no extra cost to anyone.

We cannot alleviate all the problems but we can certainly help and are on standby for the word to have this done.

Yours faithfully,

Roy Beepat

Chairman Giftland Group

Editor’s note: The Guyana Power and Light issued the following press release yesterday pertaining to this matter: “In line with the Government’s vision to enhance the generating and reserve capacity of GPL Inc., and to meet the needs of its customers, the new Board of Directors (`The Board’) of GPL considered the proposal from MCG Investments Inc (Giftland Mall) to enter into a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with GPL Inc.

“In furtherance of its consideration, the Board authorised GPL to move forward efforts to finalize a PPA Agreement with MCG Investments Inc. that met the needs and interests of the Company. The Board also instructed GPL Inc. to ensure all of the legal and regulatory modalities were satisfied.

“Whilst the legal and regulatory modalities are being completed, the Board also authorised GPL Inc. to commence inviting Expressions of Interest (EoIs) from other potential power providers with immediately available generation capacity who may be interested in supplying electricity to GPL Inc”.
