A team from the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) is expected to be deployed to the town of Mahdia following reported high winds which caused damage to a number of structures in the town, including a school building which had its roof blown off.

According to a Facebook post by Director General of the CDC Colonel Kester Craig, reports from the town indicated that they would have experienced “a gust of high winds” yesterday around 4 pm, which lasted for approximately 15 minutes.

The CDC was monitoring the situation in the region and was awaiting reports of a comprehensive assessment which was to be conducted by officials from the region.

According to Craig, a preliminary assessment showed that a number of buildings, inclusive of the Mahdia Primary school, sustained structural damage, with the roof of the school being blown off. Power lines were also damaged and a house appeared to have been blown down.

Further reports stated that some persons would have received injuries and one of them was transported to Georgetown for further treatment.

The CDC team is expected to be sent to Mahdia today to assess the needs of the affected areas.
