Grove construction worker Travis Garrett, who was accused of chopping his neighbour with a cutlass, yesterday had the attempted murder charge against him dismissed after his victim accepted compensation.

It was alleged that Garrett chopped Ramchan Chunnilall on July 24th, at Grove, East Bank Deme-rara, with intent to commit murder.

When the case was called before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan yesterday, Police Prosecutor Neville Jeffers told the court that statements in the matter were ready. How-ever, he noted that Chunnilall no longer wished to proceed with the criminal complaint.

As a result, Chunnilall took to the witness stand and informed the court of his reason for not offering evidence against Garrett.

He noted that he has chosen to accept compensation in the amount of $20,000 from Garrett, whom he said has a wife and children who are “punishing.” “I felt sorry for him,” he stated.

As a result, Garrett was discharged.

During Garrett’s arraignment, Chunnilall had said Garrett, who is his neighbour, was the sole breadwinner of his family and had to take care of his “sick wife” and three children. “I would just like the court to warn him and finish the matter,” Chunnilall said.

However, given the nature of the charge, an objection was raised by the prosecution.
