A Grove construction worker is now a remanded prisoner on an attempted murder charge after allegedly chopping his neighbour with a cutlass.

Bail was denied to Travis Garrett, 34, although his would-be victim, Ramchan Chunnilall, told a city magistrate that he did not want to proceed with the charge.

It is alleged that Garrett chopped Chunnilall on July 24th, at Grove, East Bank Demerara, with intent to commit murder.

After the charge was read, Chunnilall told the court that he no longer wished to proceed with the matter. He said Garrett, who is his neighbour, is the sole breadwinner of his family and has to take care of his “sick wife” and three children. “I would just like the court to warn him and finish the matter,” Chunnilall said.

Prosecutor Seon Blackman, however, stated that considering the seriousness of the charge, it could not be easily dropped and objected to bail, citing the prevalence and seriousness of the offence. He noted that Chunnilall sustained a chop on the left side of his neck.

The magistrate subsequently remanded Garrett to prison and told him to make his next court appearance on August 5th before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
