A young man, said to be known for committing simple larcenies, was remanded to prison yesterday after being charged with stealing a cellphone.

Chris Pollard, 18, of Lot 83 David Street, Kitty, appeared in the courtroom of Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus on September 16th, when he pleaded not guilty to stealing a cellphone, valued $45,000, which was the property of Sachin Narine, on September 13th at Camp Street, Georgetown.

Police prosecutor Quinn Harris strongly objected to Pollard being released on bail. He informed the court that Pollard is known to the court as he has several pending simple larceny charges in the city courts, and at the Providence Magistrate’s Court.

Harris related that on the day in question, around 5.30 pm, Narine was walking on Camp Street, heading in a southern direction. He was on his phone at the time and felt his phone being snatched from his hands. He turned and saw Pollard, accompanied by two others. In an attempt to retrieve his phone, he approached the defendant.

It was reported that Pollard threatened to hit him if he got closer and this made Narine raise an alarm. Police in the area were alerted but did not catch up to Pollard after he ran off with the cell phone. However, Pollard was eventually found and arrested.

The magistrate subsequently remanded Pollard and adjourned the matter until October 7th.
