A family of five was last evening displaced after a fire of unknown origin ripped through their Plaisance, East Coast Demerara house.

Details surrounding the fire which started around 7.30pm remain sketchy.

Reports are that the house which is situated on Graham Street, Plaisance, ECD was owned by “Florence”. She lived with four other relatives including her young grandson.

At the time of the fire, only the child and “Florence” were said to be home. They were unable to save any of their belongings.

When Stabroek News visited the scene last night, the occupants were not present. They were at the police station.

Residents said they formed a bucket brigade in an effort to put out the fire but their efforts were in vain.

They said they were disappointed in the service provided by the Guyana Fire Service.

“Three fire tender came. The first one came the pump not working, the second came without water, the third one came without water,” a resident said.

They were however grateful that the fire did not spread to nearby buildings.

Stabroek News understands that this is the third time the house was destroyed by fire.

An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the fire.
