Bosai workers accept salary, wage increase over two years

Non-management and supervisory staff of Bosai Minerals Group (Guyana) Inc (BMGGI) yesterday accepted a 14% wage and salary increase over two years, bringing protest and strike action taken on Wednesday, 18 September 2019 to an end.

Per this agreement, non-management and supervisory staff will receive a 7% increase for the period April 2019 – March 2020, and another 7% increase for the period April 2020 to March 2021.

National Association of Agricultural, Commercial, and Industrial Employees (NAACIE), and BOSAI employee, Neptrid Hercules, speaking with Stabroek News yesterday afternoon said that employees were happy with the offer.

Non-management and supervisory staff of Bosai proceeded to take strike and protest action on Wednesday after three-month-long negotiations broke down due to Bosai’s insistence that it could only afford to pay an increase of 6.5%. The employees were reportedly demanding at least an 8% increase. Stabroek News was also told that Bosai had indicated a willingness to pay a 13% increase over two years (6.5% per year) if the employees were minded to accept a multi-year deal.

The industrial action triggered an immediate response from Bosai, as some hours after, the company called a meeting, during which it offered employees a 7% increase for two years if they were willing to accept a two-year deal. A meeting was held yesterday, during which the offer was considered, and accepted.

Hercules has said that the agreement also sees employees who took part in the strike not being paid for the days they did not work: the 18th and 19th of September, 2019.
