Cordons erected around the Ministry of the Presidency yesterday were done based on the Guyana Police Force’s (GPF) Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), Police Public Relations Officer (ag) Superintendent Shivpersaud Bacchus told Stabroek News.

According to Bacchus the force received intelligence that a protest of the Ministry was planned and moved to set up the perimeter to prevent persons from getting to close to the compound.

“It is normal to establish a perimeter between protestors and the place they are protesting. You would’ve seen us do the same several times around Parliament building,” he told Stabroek News.

The cordon established extended from North Road and Homestretch Avenue on Vlissengen Road, from Oronoque to Vlissengen Road on South Road, Oronoque St and Shiv Chanderpaul Drive on Charlotte Street and from Shiv Chanderpaul Drive to Vlissengen Road on Regent Road.

Asked whether there is a specific distance established in the SOP, Bacchus said yes but admitted he was not in a position to provide it.

“I will have to check the book for that. I can’t remember right now,” he said.

The cordons come in the wake of several boisterous protests mounted by the PPP and its supporters against President David Granger including one at the Pegasus Hotel on Thursday.
