Bail was on Friday granted to two men jointly charged with the illegal possession of narcotics after they denied the charge, which was read to them by a city magistrate.

The charge, which was read by acting Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus in Georgetown, alleged that Joel De Oliveira and Marlon Fredericks, on September 26th, at Westminster, West Bank Demerara, had 81 grammes of cannabis in their possession for the purpose of trafficking.

After the duo denied the charge, Prosecutor Warren Thornhill objected to bail, citing the nature of the offence. Further, Thornhill stated that he believes that the two men, if released, would not attend their trial. He said that the cannabis was found behind a house, which is believed to have been occupied by the two men.

However, both men denied living in the house together. De Oliveira said that he did not live in the house while Fredericks said that the house was occupied by his family.

Despite repeated objections by Prosecutor Thornhill, the magistrate granted the two men bail in the sum of $40,000 each. She told them to make their next court appearance at the Wales Magistrate’s Court on October 10th.
