Youths get bail on robbery, resisting arrest charges

Two young men accused of robbery offences were released on bail yesterday after they denied the allegations.

Shaquille Thomas, 19, of Lot 26 Peter’s Hall, East Bank Demerara and Shamar Sears, 18, were arraigned before Magistrate Clive Nurse on the charge that each of them, in the company of others, robbed a man of a cellphone.

Thomas, who is a carwash attendant was read two charges. The first charge stated that on September 27th at Robb Street, while he was with others, he robbed Alfred Rodrigues of a cellphone, valued $30,000. The second charge alleges that on the same date at Avenue of the Republic and in the company of others, he robbed Marissa Spencer of an 18 pennyweight gold chain, valued $216,000.

Thomas pleaded not guilty to both charges and in an application for bail by his attorney, the court heard that the young man had never been convicted nor has any pending matters at court.

The attorney also added that from her understanding, during a confrontation at the police station Spencer admitted that Thomas was not one of the men who robbed her.

Meanwhile, Sears was also charged with the robbery of Rodrigues and two other offences. It was alleged that on September 27th at Cornhill Street, Sears damaged a shirt valued $3,000, property of Constable Clement. In addition, he was charged with resisting arrest by a police officer (Constable Clement) acting in the execution of his duties on the same date and at the location.

Sears, who also informed the court that he had never been convicted nor had any pending matters, pleaded not guilty to all three charges.

With no objections from the  prosecutor, both men were released on $75,000 bail each for the robbery charges. Sears was also released on self-bail for the other two charges. Thomas was also told to report to the City Constabulary every Monday and Friday until the conclusion of his trial as a condition for bail. Both men were advised to report to court on December 19th for their next court hearing.
