A Georgetown resident, who allowed his pit bull to attack a wheelchair user before robbing him, was yesterday sentenced to three years behind bars after he admitted to the offence.
Michael White pleaded guilty to the charge which stated that on September 27th at Robb Street, Georgetown, he robbed Compton Carter of $26,000. The charge was read to him by Magistrate Faith McGusty in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court Five.
According to Police Prosecutor Annalisa Brummell, on the day in question at around 7 am, Carter was in his wheelchair heading west on Robb Street to conduct business when White approached him with his pit bull. The pit bull subsequently began attacking Carter, who fell off his wheelchair. Carter then grabbed Carter’s pension book and the money that was lying on the street and fled. The victim reported the matter to the police and White was soon arrested.
White told the court that he was merely walking down the street and was trying to prevent the dog from attacking Carter. “The dog jumped and everything drop out and as I pulled the dog away, I picked up the money,” he said. White also revealed that he was arrested for a similar offence but the matter was dismissed. He was subsequently sentenced to three years in prison.
