The Ministry of the Presidency is seeking nominations for national awards for 2020 in two categories.

An advertisement for such was placed in the September 29 edition of Kaieteur News and repeated yesterday. The invitation will raise a variety of questions as general elections are to be held on March 2nd 2020.

In 2018, national awards were announced on May 26 and conferred on October 6 that year. In the aftermath of the successful December 21, 2018 motion of no confidence against the government, the 2019 national awards were announced on February 23rd this year and conferred on May 24th this year.

It would appear that the plan is for national awards to be announced again on February 23rd next year, just days before the scheduled General and Regional Elections. It would mean that if elections are held as scheduled that the awards would have to be conferred by a new government – whether the re-elected coalition, the opposition or some other contender.

The advertisement invited recommendations to the Chancellor of the Orders of Guyana for nominations under the Order of Roraima and the Order of Service of Guyana. It said that these awards may include, but are not limited to, industry and commerce, education, medicine, religious, cultural, sports, conservation and social protection etc.

Nominations are to be made on the  prescribed form contained in the advertisement and have to be submitted to the Ministry of the Presidency no later than January 3rd, 2020.
