Linden murder, East La Penitence market shooting may be linked

Investigators believe that there might be a link between last month’s shooting at Linden which claimed the life of Ian  Williams and that from last Saturday which left one man injured at the East La Penitence market.

This is according to Crime Chief (ag) Michael Kingston, who when questioned by Stabroek News yesterday as to whether it has yet been established if the Linden shooting is indeed gang related responded in the negative while stating that it is more of a rivalry.

“I won’t say gang related…..there seems to be a rivalry between several persons,” Kingston said.

He explained that it is suspected that the two men who escaped on Saturday following the shooting at the East La Penitence market which left their accomplice LaShawn Browne injured are among the six who are wanted by the police in relation to the Linden shooting.

While details surrounding Saturday’s shooting which unfolded around 12.45 pm at the market remain sketchy, this newspaper was told that Browne and two accomplices exited a vehicle in the vicinity of Twins Pharmacy and they allegedly opened fire on a man.

Their target managed to escape but not before returning fire and hitting Browne.

Kingston said that the police later learnt that the intended target was Teon Allen.

Stabroek News was previously informed that it is suspected that the shooting of Williams called ‘OJ’ which occurred around 8.30 pm on September 28 in Central Amelia’s Ward, Linden is linked to an ongoing gang war in the Linden area.

It is suspected that Williams might have been targeted as he is related to reported gang leader and former police officer Allen, called ‘Spoil Child.’

Williams’ partner, Melita Antigua was also injured during the incident.

On Monday, the police issued a wanted bulletin for six men who are wanted in connection with the murder and attempted murder of Williams and Antigua respectively which occurred at Lover’s Lane, South Amelia’s Ward, Mackenzie, Linden.

The wanted men are Martin Fraser, Renard Caesar, Richard Caesar, Randy Billy, Sherwin Benjamin and Denzil Grant.

Residents had previously told this newspaper that on the night of the incident they witnessed a vehicle being followed by another and subsequently heard gunshots.

This led some to believe that the vehicle that Williams and Antigua were in was being trailed by another.

Allen is known to the police.

Early last month, the police had issued a wanted bulletin for him in relation to the attempted murder of two women in Linden.

In August, 2017, Allen was charged with harbouring wanted men Mark Royden Williams and Uree Varswyck, who had escaped from the Camp Street Prison on July 9th, 2017.

In January of the same year, Allen was among three men who were charged with the illegal possession of an AK-47 and matching ammunition.

They were taken into custody after the items were found by the police during a raid at a John Street, Campbellville house. Allen was also charged in relation to several other offences, including armed robbery.
