Renard Caesar, one of the men who was allegedly involved in a recent shootout at La Penitence Market was yesterday remanded to prison after he was charged with the attempted murder of fugitive ex-policeman Teon Allen.

Caesar, 23, was not required to plead to the indictable charge, which was read by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in a Georgetown court, which heard that he is part of a gang that is at odds with Allen.

The charge alleges that on October 5th, 2019, at La Penitence Market, with intent to commit murder, Caesar discharged a loaded firearm at Allen, known as ‘Spoil Child.’

Prosecutor Neville Jeffers objected to bail being granted based on the nature of the allegations and due to the fact that a firearm was used to commit the offence.

Jeffers also told the court that there is an ongoing issue between Allen and “the mob family,” which is a gang made up of persons from French Guiana and Linden. He said that Caesar is reportedly a part of the gang.

On the day in question, he noted, Allen was purchasing vegetables at the La Penitence Market, when a black car drove by and one of the occupants pointed at Allen. According to the prosecutor, three persons, including Caesar, who was armed with a gun, exited the car and discharged several rounds at Allen, who sought refuge after which Caesar and his two accomplices proceeded to escape.

The shooting was subsequently reported to the Criminal Investigation Department after which several checks were made at Caesar’s home. However, the police were unable to arrest Caesar and a wanted bulletin was issued for him. Caesar later turned himself in at the MacKenzie Police Station and investigations were carried out. The prosecutor added that the police have possession of a video showing that Caesar was present at the shootout.

Caesar’s lawyer, Gordon Gilhuys, in his application for bail, told the court that the allegation of attempted murder was never put to his client, who is a construction worker from Amelia’s Ward, Linden. He further noted that yesterday morning was the first time that police showed his client a video of the shootout.

The magistrate then asked for the lot number of the house where Caesar supposedly lives but Caesar said that the house he lives in has no lot number. However, the prosecutor revealed that Caesar had given Lot 904 South Amelia’s Ward, which he noted did not correspond with what he told the court. He further objected to bail as a result.

The magistrate subsequently remanded Caesar to prison until October 31st, when the statements are expected to be disclosed.
