Veteran chess player and Stabroek News’ columnist Errol Tiwari played flawless chess yesterday to force the resignation of Steve Leung in their second round clash of the GAICO sponsored Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) tournament at the National  Resource centre.

Tiwari, with a slight material advantage, (two bishops and four pawns against a rook and three pawns) forced a game Leung to resign shortly after he lost his rook.

Tiwari, who had beaten Kenrick Brathwaite in his first round encounter was on two points after the second round.

Former national junior champion Saeed Ali rebounded from his first round defeat to Taffin Khan to force Jacob’s Nauth resignation one move from checkmate.

Also securing wins yesterday morning were GCF president Frankie Farley who prevailed  in a knight and pawns endgame against Chino Chung; Khan who eased past Adrian Roopnaraine and Nathoo who won against Rai Sharma.

Two of the country’s top players in Anthony Drayton and Wendell Meusa are not participating in the tournament.
