Relatives have identified the man who was choked to death during a suspected robbery on Church Street, Queenstown, Georgetown, on Saturday night.

The man has been identified as Jason Jabharry Bowen, 32, a store manager, of Camp Street and formerly of 47 Middle Street, Sparendaam, East Coast Demerara.

His mother, Ingrid Bowen, last night told this newspaper that she wants justice for her son. She said that she would like to see her son’s killer face the full force of the law since he was killed senselessly.

The mother yesterday related that at around 3 pm on Sunday she received a call from a friend of her son who enquired about his whereabouts.

“The person called and asked if I know where he is because the person called his cellphone and it kept ringing out. So I told the person, I didn’t hear from him. He normally calls me to find out what shift I am working for the week,” the mother, who is a security guard at Federal Security Services, said.

She explained that later in the day another friend of the family called and told her to check online news site Demerara Waves. “I ain’t know about them things that, so my relatives come and show me and I saw the bloody picture with him. I didn’t know that happen to meh son,” the distraught mother said.

She explained that after she found out, she informed her daughter. She stated because of the rains on Sunday afternoon, they decided to visit the funeral parlour yesterday to identify the body.

Tiron Bowen, the sister of the dead man, told Stabroek News that when she saw her brother in the morgue, the marks of violence were visible on the upper part of his body.

“From his neck up he was pale and there were marks around his neck and bruises around his face. It showed that he was badly beaten during the robbery,” the sister recounted.

The body remains at the Lyken Funeral Parlour awaiting an autopsy, which is scheduled for tomorrow.

“All we want is to see justice served. It was just him, God, the man who attacked him and the security guard that know what went on. So all we want is justice for him,” the mother lamented.

The police said the attack on Bowen occurred around 9.38 pm on Saturday in front of the Office of the Leader of the Opposition on Church Street.

According to a security guard, the suspect and the now deceased man were seen scuffling and the suspect wrapped a belt around the victim’s neck and strangled him. The suspect was apprehended by public-spirited citizens and handed over to the police.

The suspect, a 24-year-old man of ‘A’ Field, Sophia who is known to the police, remains in police custody assisting with the investigation.
