Defending champs squeak past YMCA Old Fort

Defending champion Woodpecker Hikers and Pepsi Hikers clinched victories in the Women and Men’s Division respectively when the GTT National Indoor Hockey Championships continued on Tuesday.

Witnessed by a sprinkling of spectators at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Homestretch Avenue, Woodpecker Hikers squeaked past YMCA Old Fort 2-1.

Maria Munroe registered a brace in the third and 30th minute. For the losers, Minsodia Culpepper netted in the 35th minute. On the other hand, Pepsi Hikers downed Saints 7-3.

Aroydy Branford recorded a helmet-trick in the third, 15th, 27th and 38th minute. Assisting with goals in the 19th, 24th and 26th minute respectively were Robert France, Randy Hope and Devin Munroe.

For the losers, Hilton Chester accumulated two goals in the 32nd and 37th minute while Baraka Garnett scored in the 17th minute.

In the Second Division, YMCA Old Fort crushed Bounty GCC 3-0. Omar Hopkinson, Warren Williams and Ronaldo Simmons scored in the 17th, 23rd and 29th respectively.

Similarly, Saints Sensation whipped Hikers 3-1. Baraka Garnett, Tivesard Garnett and Hilmar Chester netted in the second, 23rd and 26th minute apiece. For the losers Brian Asregado netted the lone goal in the 13th minute.

In the second match of the women’s division, Tiffany Solomon and Sandy Roopnarine netted in the 18th and 38th minute,as GCC Spice defeated Saints 2-0.

Meanwhile, Bounty GCC edged YMCA Old Fort 5-4 in the veterans division.

Alan Fernandes tallied a hat-trick in the first, sixth and 28th minute while Devin Hooper and Dwayne Scott added goals in the 5th and 21st minute respectively.

 For the losers, Jason DeSantos tallied a double in the 14th and 19th minute while Aderemi Simon and John Abrahams added goals in the 15th and 29th minute each.

Matches continue throughout the week at the same venue, with the respective finals scheduled for Sunday.
