Canje man dies after reportedly driving off Timehri wharf

Police believe an East Canje, Berbice man drove his car off of the Timehri Wharf early yesterday morning, resulting in his death.

Dead is Umdat Jagnit, also known as ‘Anil,’ 40, a truck driver of Lot 5 Betsy Ground Village, East Canje, Berbice.

Police yesterday said that a security guard at the dock reported that persons alerted him that a car turned turtle off of the wharf into the Demerara River.

All indications suggest that Jagnit, a father of one, drove the car, PHH 5423, off of the wharf around 4.30 am yesterday.

The vehicle was later removed and the man’s body was found in the backseat of the car.

However, it was also noticed that the driver’s seatbelt was wrapped around his left foot.

No marks of violence were noticed on the body.

According to the police, the area was searched and persons were questioned but no useful information was obtained.

Meanwhile, according to the man’s sister, who is also from Betsy Ground Village, East Canje Berbice, she had no idea what he was doing in the area since she was not often in contact with him.

His body is presently at the Lyken Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem examination.
